The Invisible World in a Drop of Water: Diatoms, Biodiversity and Time

Diatoms are microscopic algae found in nearly every aquatic environment on Earth. Invisible to the naked eye, they play a crucial role in global ecosystems, producing a significant share of the oxygen we breathe. At the same time, they are highly sensitive indicators of environmental change—tiny witnesses to the health of our waters. 

Dr. Nelida Abarca will open the door to their fascinating world, blending scientific insight with visual exploration. A hands-on microscopy session will give participants the rare chance to observe these remarkable organisms up close.

The event also features a guided visit to the diatom collections of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin, including the renowned Friedrich Hustedt Collection. Built over more than a century, it offers a unique link between past discoveries and modern research.
