Ladies and gentlemen, we're happy to once again invite you to an edition of the Berlin Sustainability Talk. On Tuesday, February 12th, from 4-6p.m., Prof. Dr. Detlef Jahn will give a talk entitled "Environmental Performancein Comparative Perspective: the Dependent Variable Problem in Environmental Research." The event will be held at the conference room (room 3.1c) of the Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU), Ihnestraße 22, 14195 Berlin.

Policy research measuring country performance from acomparative perspective is always confronted with a dependent variable problem. This is true in highly established fields like economic and social policy, but more pronounced in a newly emerging field such as environmental policy. However, to measure environmental performance is particularly challenging since there are problems with comparable data, on the one hand, and constructing aconvincing index of environmental performance, on the other. The presentation will address both challenges and offer solutions by comparing the environmental performance of 21 highly industrialized OECD countries over a time period from 1980 to 2005. Results for several environmental indicators will be given. These results originate from a research project which was sponsored by the DFG for almost 10 years. Interestingly, data availability has deteriorated in recent years, creating another challenge for environmental research. Concerning the construction of aggregated performance indices, the approach of contextualized comparison will be introduced for macro-comparative studies. The presentation offers several answers to the question how to grasp environmental performance from a comparative perspective, thus providing the framework for a fruitful discussion.

Prof. Jahn holds the Chair for Comparative Politics at the University of Greifswald. To learn more about his work, please visit his website.

The Berlin Sustainability Talk is a monthly brown bag seminar at the Environmental Policy Research Centre (ffu). It provides a forum for discussion and exchange about ongoing research projects and recent trends in environmental policy research with scholars of other institutes, business representatives, politics, and public administrations as well as the interested public. A registration for the event is not required.
